  7.     Count on CHRISTO, that eccentric Conceptual artist, to get
  8. people talking. His latest extravaganza, The Umbrellas, a
  9. six-year, $26 million effort, literally opened last week when
  10. 1,340 20-ft. blue umbrellas were unfurled along a 12-mile
  11. stretch in Japan, followed by 1,760 yellow umbrellas dotting 18
  12. miles of hills in California. Ironically, rain in Japan delayed
  13. the opening, but in sunny California the umbrellas hit big with
  14. tourists and local merchants. Some area residents, though,
  15. complained about traffic and pollution. Said Christo: "The
  16. project mirrors the people about it."
